IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 asks you to write a formal essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

Word count: Minimum 250 words

Task type: Formal academic essay

Purpose: Present and support an opinion, explain a problem, or discuss two sides of an issue using clear arguments and relevant examples.

YOU NEED TO:

Understand the question type (opinion, discussion, advantages/disadvantages, problem/solution, etc.).

Present a clear position throughout the essay.
-
Support your ideas with examples, reasons, and evidence (real or hypothetical).

Use formal, academic language (avoid contractions, slang, or overly casual phrases).

Structure your essay clearly: introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion.

SUGGESTED PRACTICE ACTIVITIES:

Practise identifying essay types and writing appropriate thesis statements.

Write plans and outlines for a variety of Task 2 questions before writing full essays.

Focus on writing strong topic sentences and supporting ideas.

Rewrite or upgrade model answers using more advanced vocabulary or better grammar.

Time yourself writing a complete essay to simulate test conditions (40 mins).
